Step Brothers

Step Brothers: Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly team up again to bring us a boorish comedy that has very few laughs. The biggest problem I had with the movie was how dim-witted the two lead characters are portrayed. The concept for the movie could have worked if they did not stoop to such low levels of stupidity for laughs (or what they thought were laughs). Ferrell and Reilly each play guys who still live at home with their single parents (one with his mom, the other with his dad). When the parents meet and fall in love the four of them must learn to live together in one house. Some of the humor came out of left field and gave me a chuckle. However the movie as a whole is not very coherent. I would have liked to see Ferrell and Reilly put a little more effort in developing their characters and thus adding some variety to the jokes other than what we were given. Looking for a good laugh? Look elsewhere……this is one of Ferrell’s worst.

Wanted

Wanted: Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, and Morgan Freeman star in this high octane action flick. This movie is based on a comic book and parallels the film The Matrix a great deal. Wesley is your everyday account manger who is sick of his job. Then one day he finds out he is actually the son of a great assassin who is a member of the secret order "The Fraternity”. The Fraternity is a band of assassins that cleanse society by killing evil doers after receiving their names from a mysterious “Loom of Fate”. The comic book element of the story is that while the characters are not superheroes, they can utilize adrenaline to pull off amazing feats. They also have the ability to bend bullets to go around objects and then bend them back to their targets. The action in the movie is constant, electrifying, and just plain fun. The movie also has a strong enough story to keep you interested throughout. Wanted does not try to be too serious and that helps you accept some of the more implausible events and the overall concept. This is one “popcorn movie” done right!!!

Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder: Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. not only spoof Hollywood war movies, but also the whole Hollywood system. For starters, Robert Downey Jr. plays an esteemed Australian method actor who dyes his skin in order to play an African-American captain in the movie. When it looks like the production is in jeopardy, the director decides he needs to get the best out of his cast. He brings them out into the jungle and has them find their own way home. The actors are under the impression that everyone is in on the movie, when in actuality their lives are on the line. It took a little time for this movie to grow on me, but the movie just kept getting funnier. I think a second viewing would only illuminate more amusing pleasures. Tom Cruise like you have never seen him before has a small, but hilarious role as the head of the studio. This is a very big….very silly movie….so give it a spin and have a laugh!

Kung Fu Panda

Kung Fu Panda: I think the title of the film pretty much sums up what the movie is about. Jack Black voices Po, a panda that dreams of becoming the dragon master of Kung Fu. When an open Kung Fu competition finally arrives, he idiotically ends up as “the chosen one”. Did the grand master make a mistake or is this really Po’s destiny? This really is a Jack Black movie, the character was written with him in mind. He supplies enough humor for this film to be enjoyed by older and younger viewers alike. Yes the movie is funny, but it also is action packed. The animation and sound effects during the action scenes are a big highlight. The plot is about as simple as it can get, but the movie never tries to be that serious – it knows what it is = A fun spin for everyone!

Get Smart

Get Smart…..better yet: Get bored, really bored! Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway star in the big screen version of the 1970’s hit TV show. Carell plays Maxwell Smart who is promoted to “agent” and is needed immediately to help solve an internal crime at the agency. He is partnered with Agent 99 (Hathaway) to try to find out how vital information about the agents and their identities was stolen. Maybe it is because we have seen the “silly detective partnered with a more skilled partner” scenario so much, but the humor just came off as stale. The irony being that it was the original TV show that inspired a lot of knockoffs throughout the years that in return hurt this film’s originality. I was really hoping for some funny moments from Carell, but the majority of the laughs supplied were of the slight chuckle variety, although I did have a laugh during the film's main dance sequence. Meanwhile, the action portion of the movie tried too hard. I was actually annoyed by having surround sound at this point. All of this added up to a big yawn.

The Happening

The Happening: Oh, I see what is “Happening” here – M. Night Shyamalan makes another terrible movie….this guy is on a roll!! Mark Wahlberg stars as a high school science teacher, who along with his wife tries to flee the Philadelphia area because of a strange outbreak that is occurring outdoors. Strange might not be the right word – the outbreak causes people to stop what they are doing and then in a trance like motion kill themselves by any means possible. Nobody is sure why this is happening, but it seems to start in heavily populated areas and in parks. Our heroic science teacher latches on to the theory that it is the plants and trees fighting back against the human population. Wahlberg adds some humor to the film as he plays his character in a very corny way and his line delivery is comical. The movie is not very scary or eerie or suspenseful…….what it is -- is crappy.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Forgetting Sarah Marshall: When you see the declaration of "From the guys who brought you The-40-Year-Old-Virgin and Knocked Up”, you expect a movie with a lot of laughs. Sarah Marshall has plenty of laughs, but I would say it is the closest of the three films to being a full fledged romantic comedy. When Sarah Marshall (a TV Actress) breaks up with her boyfriend Peter (a music composer) for another well know celebrity, Peter is devastated. He decides to get away from it all and take a vacation in Hawaii – problem is Sarah Marshall along with her new boyfriend are staying at the same resort. Although the plot is not all that original, the characters and the situations they get into are. You can expect some outrageous comedic moments including seeing Peter’s peter on more than one occasion. The end of the film can not escape the “crappy-romantic-comedy-ending” syndrome, but the film as a whole is worth a spin.

Chicago 10

Chicago 10: Is one of the more creative and fascinating documentaries that I have ever seen. The subject is that of the Vietnam protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago and the subsequent trial of Abbie Hoffman and seven others who were thought to have incited the riots. The film uses old footage, animation, and a wonderful soundtrack to tell the story. The footage shown is remarkable to see, especially for a Chicagoan who did not grow up during that era (this itself is worth a watch). Animation is used to depict the court scenes with the outrageous dialogue and actions coming straight from court transcripts. The film drives home its point and reminds this generation that we the people have the right to protest and the right to be heard!

Smart People

Smart People: Plain and simple – this movie tried to hard to be smart. The net result was a boring story about a widowed English teacher (Quaid) who starts dating his doctor, whom ends up being a former student of his. Meanwhile his unreliable brother starts up a strange relationship with his daughter. Unlike the very witty Wonder Boys (similar movie - but much better), these characters are one dimensional and not funny. Can Sarah Jessica Parker make a good movie? The jury is still out.

Be Kind Rewind

Be Kind Rewind: Jack Black and Mos Def star in this most absurd comedy. After Jack Black’s character becomes magnetized, he accidentally erases all of the VHS tapes in his friend’s (Mos Def) video store. When an angry customer requests a copy of Ghostbusters after receiving a blank tape, the duo decide to shoot their own version of the film. The silly and bizarre things they come up with to reenact the film on a camcorder are the funniest moments of the movie. Of course, their small film is a hit and they go on to make several other "sweded" depictions/distortions of many other classic films. The story as a whole did not work for me and in fact at the end I was not even sure what the conclusion was supposed to be. The film does supply some ridiculous “stupid humor” scenes, so dumb they are almost witty – if that makes any sense. However, in the end there is no reason to Rewind, because I am giving it a “Kick it to the Floor”.

Lust, Caution: Ang Lee brings us a story of espionage set in Shanghai, China during WWII. Their plan is to have one of their own, Wong Chia Chi aka Mrs. Mak befriend his wife and then befriend Yee himself. As the relationship between Mrs. Mak and Mr. Yee develops (and DOES IT develop), the line between good and evil becomes cloudier. The film does an excellent job of showing the spectrum of emotions that the characters feel for one another as well as the complexity of the human heart. If you are up for a good foreign film about spies that centers around a very untraditional love story which contains some very graphic sex scenes……give this beauty a spin.

27 Dresses

27 Dresses: Or how to make a dull romantic comedy 101. I am shocked that they did not have a warning before the movie informing the viewers that no actual writers were used to make this feature film. Instead, the filmmakers opted to follow all of the clichés and depict the shallow character traits from past crappy films of the same nature. Katherine Heigl stars as Jane, a woman who has been a bridesmaid 27 times all the while dreaming of her own perfect wedding. During this time she is infatuated with her boss (Ed Burns) who asks her to do everything for him including pick-up his dry cleaning. Of course the boss falls in love with someone close to Jane (in this case her sister) which devastates her. Don’t worry though, by the end of the film Jane has an epiphany and realizes that she is actually in love with someone else. With a title like “27 Dresses” you are damn sure to get a video montage of Jane wearing each and every dress (this happens around the 53 minute mark), unfortunately that was only the halfway point of the film.

The Orphanage: Finally - a smart, well crafted movie that will give you a hell of a scare. My biggest complaint about the horror genre is that the movies are made for the dumbs, just concentrating on cheap jolts. The Orphanage on the other hand, has a very good story to go along with some scary moments and creepy imagery. The story centers on Laura, a young mother who spent time at the orphanage when she was a child. She and her family return to the orphanage with plans to turn it into a safe haven for children with disabilities. When Laura’s son goes missing, the creepy “orphanage” – gets even creepier. In addition, the film also has a “mystery” feel to it that kept me intrigued from start to finish. Plus, where most scary movies fail with some corny ending, The Orphanage flourishes. This is one very good rental!!!

Rambo: On the heels of the successful Rocky revival, Sylvester Stallone tries to do it again – this time with the Green Beret John J. Rambo. The story picks up with Rambo working on a river in Thailand, obviously wanting to be left alone. A group of missionaries looking to get into war-torn Burma ask Rambo if he would be kind enough to drive them there on his riverboat. John Rambo, being a softie, caves when the pretty girl missionary asks him nicely. Once in Burma the missionaries are captured (shocker) and only Rambo can save them (bigger shocker). The film is short (85 min) and to the point, with an onslaught of action and violence. I did not like that the action focuses on big groups of people being gunned down at one time. I would much rather have seen Rambo use his Green Beret instincts to make calculated and precise kills. The movie felt like it was thrown together in a week’s time for the sole purpose of making a little coin for John J.

One brother owes a gambling debt, while the other needs money to keep impressing a new girl in his life. An opportunity arises that can get them the money they need, but the question is – can they live with the consequences? The film is written and directed by the great Woody Allen and bears a resemblance to his works: Match Point & Crimes and Misdemeanors. However compared to those two films, especially that latter, I would label this movie as “minor Allen”. The story intrigued me enough for me to recommend, but I could see the heavy dialogue turning some viewers off.

The Mist on DVD

The Mist: The most fascinating aspect of The Mist is how all of the town people unanimously refer to the hazy cloud as “the mist!” Not one person veers from the consensus and argues that it should be called “a fog”. I myself would use “smog”, “fog”, “haze”, or even “the vapor” to describe the phenomenon before dubbing it “The Mist”. Oh well. The story comes to us from Stephen King - The Master of Horror (using his full title). After a wicked storm runs through a small east coast town, a strange “vapor” or “mist" if we must, rolls in. At this time, most of the people in the town (or the ones we care about) are at the local supermarket stacking up on your typical Y2K items. Now the mist is scary, but what lurks inside the mist is even scarier! In between some good frightening jolts, the story focuses on how fear affects people’s psyche especially in a religious sense as one of the ladies in the supermarket is a holy roller. As with a lot of these monster movies, the film has a little bit of a b-movie feel. If you are really into this genre of film I would tell you to Pick it Up, but for the rest of us….

Lars and the Real Girl DVD

Lars and The Real Girl: This is a tough movie to explain – so stick with me. Lars (Ryan Gosling) is clearly not playing with a full deck of cards. Early on in the film you are not sure exactly what is wrong, just that something is…..wrong. He is a young man that lives by himself in a garage behind his brother and sister-in-law. One day he announces he is dating someone – the strange thing being “that someone” is a sex doll he ordered on line. He takes the doll everywhere (Parties, dinner, church) as he sees her as being real. The psychologist he is seeing thinks it is best if his family and friends act as if she were real as well. The whole town goes along with it, hoping that Lars can work out and find the source of his mental delusion. The story could have gone wrong very easily. However thanks to great direction and another outstanding performance from Ryan Gosling, we are treated to a very heartfelt and whimsical film with REAL emotion!!!!

Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke star as brothers who concoct a plan to rob a jewelry store. What makes this idea perverse? The jewelry store is owned by their parents. The movie is split up to show each character’s perspective leading up to and during the robbery. Of course nobody makes a movie about a robbery that goes off without a hitch. By all accounts he is an innocent family man (married to an American woman) with no connection to the Egyptian terrorist group, but what we find out is just how thorough the U.S. government is of their detainees. The film walks the “believability line” a couple of times and Reese Witherspoon was clearly miscast. However the film has great structure amid the storylines and was able to slip a twist in that made it that much more enjoyable.

This should be no surprise as he not only stars, but also wrote the movie. The animation is done in a fun way, using the perspective from a bee for some good laughs. The story however is silly and near the end actually becomes absurd (…and I am taking in the fact that this is an animated film). Listen close to hear such talents as Chris Rock, Oprah, John Goodman, Michael Richards and even David Puddy! I am Legend: Will Smith stars as the last man on earth. The premise sounds intriguing, so intriguing that this is actually the 3rd film adaptation of the Richard Matheson novel (The Last Man on Earth). Unfortunately the filmmakers did not know what they wanted to do with this latest spin on the story. I felt they tried to fiddle with too many different genres. They should have either focused on making an interesting sci-fi story or fully cop-out and make a scary zombie movie. Instead they dibbled around in both and tried to layer it with an inspiring message – the result was a bit boring. I sat there waiting for the film’s “big moment”…..I was still waiting for that moment as the credits rolled 1 hour and 40 minutes later. Dan in Real Life: Take it or leave it, this film left Rythemovieguy in the middle of the road. Steve Carell plays Dan, a widower with 3 daughters. Every year his family drives up to his parent’s lake house in Rode Island for the perfect family vacation. This year while Dan is at a local book store he meets a woman that he quickly falls in love with – problem is she is on her way to the same lake house to meet up with her new boyfriend….who happens to be Dan’s brother (played by Dane Cook). For all the good the movie does = exploring the difficulties of being a widower and dealing with real father/teenage daughter problems, at the same time the story becomes silly and cliché. The vacation events are too perfect – the family runs the gamut of playing every typical movie vacation event possible- charades, tackle football, crossword puzzle competition, a morning exercise together, even a family talent show appears. The film is slightly funny at times, but mainly is a drama. Nothing I would highly recommend, but not one I would Kick to the Floor either.

The Brave One DVD Review

The Brave One: Is Jodi Foster’s vigilante flick a new take on Bronson’s Death Wish? I would say close, but not exactly. Foster plays Erica Bain, a radio talk show host who is a victim of a brutal attack by some hooligans in NY’s Central Park. The attack left her in a coma for 3 weeks and killed her boyfriend who she was with that night…..as for icing on the cake = the hooligans also steal the couple’s dog – mean. Erica then has a difficult time coping with this new sense of fear she has. This leads her to purchase a gun and subsequently go on a “revenge killing spree”. Her victims are always criminals– thus forcing the viewer to make up their mind if her actions are morally right or wrong. The film’s story is seeping with plot holes and there are more than a few spots that boarder on ridiculousness. However, I still found myself enjoying this violent thriller......... Guilty as charged.

The Assassination of Jesse James DVD

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford: I loved this movie! This is easily one of the best 2007 films I have seen. With the climax given away in the title of the movie, it comes down to great storytelling to keep viewer interest. What I thought made this an OUTSTANING motion picture were the multiple layers the story had and the emotion each layer brought with it. The fascinating story is thought provoking – not only in direct relation to the characters and their motives, but also the symbolism it has in regards to today’s “media/celebrity infatuation”. Casey Affleck plays Robert Ford and to say he did an excellent job is an understatement. With this one role I would say he overshadows anything his big brother Ben ever did on screen and should be the Affleck we see more of going forward. Brad Pitt is perfect as Jesse James. It is crucial that Jesse has a dominant and intimidating presence and Pitt brings this tenfold. The one complaint I have heard with this film is the slow moving and long runtime (160 minutes) – I only mention this so that you can properly prepare yourself to appreciate this masterpiece!

The FBI then makes a secret deal with Saudi officials to bring in an elite team to investigate the crime. However once in Saudi Arabia the FBI realizes that Saudi authorities are unwelcoming and see no reason for the American team to even be there. The 4 person FBI team sent over is played by a motley group of actors. We have Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper and Jason Bateman. Believe it or not, they actually work perfectly together. The story resides more in the action genre than the drama, though the ending tries hard to make a serious statement. I enjoyed this rental and I think most will do the same.

The King of Kong Review

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters: A documentary that looks into the world of competitive video game players and their desire to break world records on classic arcade games. Simply put – this movie is hilarious. The humor actually stems from how serious all of the people involved are about playing video games (we meet some truly unique characters). To hear someone analyze a board of Donkey Kong like John Madden at his best is pure joy. Listening to someone breakdown the challenge of avoiding a wild barrel or sketching plays on the screen to show the trajectory of a bouncing spring is very amusing. At the center of the story are 2 competitors - Steve Wiebe (an unknown) & the current Donkey Kong world record holder, Billy Mitchell. Steve Wiebe actually breaks the record on his home Donkey Kong machine and videotapes it for proof. However, his record is not recognized by the current champ nor by Twin Galaxies – the official video game record keepers. This sets up an almost “Rocky” like challenge between the two men to see who can set the high score that will be included in the Guinness Book of World Records. The film transcends the humor aspect and is carried home by the drama of the moment. The King of Kong is an excellent rental….give it a spin!

Across The Universe Review

Across The Universe: The idea is brilliant – tell a love story during the anti-war movement of Vietnam using only Beatles’ songs to move the plot forward. That time period saw many drastic changes, as did the Beatles' music, thus the perfect fit. Each Beatles' song in the movie is sung by one of the characters, not just played over a video montage. Some of the song interpretations worked beautifully (Strawberry Fields Forever was my favorite), while others were a bit of a stretch (I want to hold your hand). My main two gripes with the film were A) the love story was very weak….I never really cared if the characters got back together. And B) the songs had a very “lip sync” feel to them. I understand they have to be for the movie, but they could have made it sound a bit more genuine – instead I felt like I was watching a music video most of the time. 3:10 to Yuma Review

3:10 to Yuma: Finally a Western that does not cause Rythemovieguy to yawn. This remake of the 1957 classic stars Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, both of which do a marvelous job. My problem with most Westerns is the lack of story (They all have to do with some poor ranch hand, the railroad, and a prostitute). It always seems like the squabble they have is overblown (like a bad Three’s Company episode). That is not the case here. Yuma comes at you with a tale that pulls you in right away and drags you deeper into the plot as it moves along. In short –a rancher (Bale) agrees to hold an outlaw (Crowe) until they can get him to a train going to……Yuma. All this builds up to a final resolution that is not predictable. Throw in some good shootouts and action and you have yourself a very entertaining film about the old west.

Stardust: To be honest, when I saw the previews for this movie I chuckled. I probably would have not even given it a chance had it not been for a trusted friend’s favorable opinion. The movie has a magical fantasy feel very similar to The Princess Bride. The film knows what it wanted to be – funny, marvelous, adventurous, and a little exaggerated at times, but it is all done in a way that clicks with precision. A young man crosses into a magical land to retrieve a fallen star for the woman he loves. To his surprise the fallen star is actually a lady (Claire Danes). He is not the only person after her, also in pursuit are the king’s sons who need her to claim name to the throne and a witch (Michelle Pfeiffer) who needs her to obtain eternal youth. The movie is one delightful adventure. It may take a little time to get “into” the mystical world – but I think you will agree – it is worth the ride!

The action, which the series is known for, is just over-the-top. At one point Bruce Willis is on the wing of a fighter jet as it circles down to a fiery crash. Another big sequence sees Willis hop out of a speeding car with excellent alignment.
